Dental avulsion is a condition wherein the tooth pops out of the socket due to trauma/ accidents. It is a dental emergency. Knowing what to do and what not to do can mean saving or losing your tooth.

Did you know, though your tooth is avulsed, you can save it? Though it’s completely out, we can re-implant it. The natural tooth is always the best. Artificial tooth however good, are not as worthy as your natural tooth.

The highest chances of saving your avulsed tooth are in the first few hours of avulsion.
If your permanent/ adult tooth is avulsed, pick the tooth by crown/ white part of the tooth and never by the root. Without touching the root, try placing the tooth back in its socket.
If you see the tooth is dirty, rinse it in milk/ saline/ your saliva before attempting to place it back in its socket. It minimizes the chances of infection.
Once you place the tooth back in place, bite on a sterile gauze/ a clean handkerchief. It helps you hold the tooth back in place.

The chances of reviving your tooth are highest if it is re-implanted in the first hour of avulsion.
When there is avulsion, the blood supply to the tooth is cut. Roots have connections called PDL/ Periodontal Ligament. We need to preserve that so that the tooth can reattach.
If it is impossible for you or your buddy to keep the tooth back in its socket, keep the tooth between your cheek and gums. If the affected person is unconscious, the attending person can place it in milk or in a tooth preservation product immediately. The tooth needs to be moist throughout to prevent dehydration of the root. Water is the last option to store the avulsed tooth.

If you or your help have placed the avulsed tooth in its socket

• When you visit us, we clean the area and give suitable anaesthesia such as anaesthesia without a vasoconstrictor.
• We ensure the tooth is placed rightly and stabilize your tooth with suitable splints.
• We suture if needed, prescribe antibiotics and give instructions to take the best care.
• After 2 weeks, make sure you do not miss the follow-up visit.
• Once the tooth is affixed well, we schedule RCT/ Root Canal Treatment.

If your tooth is stored in a medium such as milk or a standard storage medium,

We

• Examine the root and tooth. If there is any contamination, we clean it with a stream of saline.
• Store the tooth in the right medium while examining and preparing you for re-implantation.
• Give local anaesthesia without a vasoconstrictor.
• Clean the socket and treat it accordingly. For instance, if there is any fracture, we address it prior to re-implantation.
• Re-implant the tooth gently with digital pressure.
• Verify it via X-rays too.
• Stabilize the tooth with splints for two to four weeks.
• Suture as needed.
• Prescribe antibiotics and follow up.
• Begin RCT within two weeks of re-implantation.
• For kids’ avulsed teeth, we take suitable care such as apexification and RCT.
• We also evaluate your need for a tetanus booster via physician consultation.

We also treat the avulsed teeth, which are outside the mouth and not stored well.

• Avoid contact sports till you heal completely.
• Have a soft diet for two weeks.
• Use a soft brush and maintain hygiene after every meal.
• Use chlorhexidine mouthwash for two weeks, twice a day.
